OUR LESSONS
Educating students with the Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory approach using multiple pathways: Auditory, Visual, Tactile and Movement which is the key effectiveness in our lessons.
What is Dyslexia?
Generally, people with dyslexia have difficulty breaking down words into simple sounds. They struggle to learn how sounds relate to letters and words (decoding) which leads to slow reading. People with dyslexia have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, writing (sentence structure), grammar, and math.
Auditory
Children with auditory processing disorder have significant trouble processing sounds, particularly with the sounds associated with speech. Orton-Gillingham will help with auditory processing. During Auditory Drills, learned sounds are practiced through spelling, which fine-tunes the sound/symbol relationship and builds automaticity.
Visual
The visual pathway deals with the sense of sight. Students need to see visuals that show the meaning of what is being taught. Students look at previously learned sound cards and say the sound they see. Keyword pictures provided on the cards give support for the recall of the sound if needed. The more letter sounds are practiced, the more automatic they eventually become.
Tactile
In the Orton-Gillingham approach, students are required to do a lot of tactile activities. This includes tracing while saying the sounds of the letters on different surfaces. Sound tracing is used to practice and reinforce sounds and spelling patterns for sounds. It can be used for sight words too.
Movement
Kids need to MOVE. Movement tied to a specific skill (linked to a mnemonic, game or competition) is very engaging and enables learners of all ages to remember reading/spelling concepts more easily and quickly.
